Woodland Activities

Sid has recently completed his Level 2 'Forest School' training and Claire her Level 3 'Forest School'and soon we hope to be able to call ourselves a Forest School Setting. Sid is now solely responsible for ensuring all childrern are able to access the Forest School ethos either down in the woods or in our newly developed garden. In the mean time we are introducing the woodland activities to our children, many of which they have experienced already. We have increased from one session a week to four down in our woodlands, where our children have been participating in 'Forest School' style activities such as Tree ID', bug hunts and knot skills, all of which are already enjoyed by the children that attend our holiday club. The activities take place in our woodlands, around the farm and are supervised by Sid and at least one other member of staff. Claire Burnell is supporting Sid with the activities and planning for the sessions. Our sponsorship of wet weather gear from Cornwall farmers has allowed us to take your children down to experience outdoor learning to its fullest potential! So look out for more information within the setting about what your children are getting up to each week.

Letters & Sounds

After some fantastic training that staff have attended, we have decided to introduce to the setting a relatively new concept of teaching our children their letters and sounds. The Letters & Sounds' Programme is a Primary National Strategy that aims to ensure our children have continued awareness of the language we use. This is a six phase strategy and primarily we will deliver this through staff, ensuring they use correct language and pronunciation of words with our children, we will all have ongoing training!! Another aspect to this method of learning is to ensure the children are provided with opportunities where they will hear specific letters and sounds at the start of our words and within them. To enable this to be introduced we have decided to link our Makaton word of the fortnight with a new 'Sound' of the fortnight. The board for our Letters, Sound & Sign' is in the pre-school on the right as you walk in through the door, if you look on the board you will see the actions for the sign of the fortnight, the linking Makaton sign and you will see how to sign the word as usual in your childs green book.
